Women’s World Cup

USA beat France 3-1 to advance to the finals. Cheny, Wambach and Morgan scored for the USA.

Japan beat Sweden 3-1. After giving up the first goal, Kawasumi scored two goals and Sawa one goal.

This is the sixth world cup for women’s soccer. USA won the title in 1991 and 1999 and placed third in the other three (1995, 2003, and 2007). Japan has advanced past the group stage only once before when they lost in the quarterfinals in 1995 to the USA 4-0.

Although most people will pick the USA to win this match (including me), don’t forget that Japan knocked out the host nation Germany and just beat Sweden who beat USA in the group stage.
